The Magicians

Nov. 12th, 2009 | 08:43 pm

...is a book. A book that you all should read. BUT! Do not look anything up about it online. For some reason, everyone who reviewed it decided to goddamn spoil the entire plot, which sorta ruins it all.

Well, almost everyone. Here is a blog post that talks about it a little bit (toward the end, just scroll down a bit): http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/blog/2009/08/things-i-like-magicians-and-faeries-of.html. If that sounds like it would appeal to you, read it!

And then talk to me about it. Because I am curious to see how other people react beyond "I like it."

Damn It Feels Good To Be A Casta

Oct. 30th, 2009 | 06:10 pm

Original lyrics written by me, based off the song "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" by Geto Boys.

I only really know the first verse of the original song (thanks, Star Salzman), so I only did alternate lyrics to that bit. The rest of it is possibly forthcoming.

---

Damn it feels good to be a casta
A real casta-ass wizard casts his spells right
A real casta-ass wizard never casts magic missile
Cuz real casta-ass wizards don't start fights.
And wizards always gotta prep spells
And sorcs say they ain't got freedom.
But real casta-ass wizards don't prep nukes
Cuz real casta-ass wizards don't need 'em.
And everything's cool in the mind of a casta
Cuz casta-ass wizards think deep.
Up three-sixty-five a year 'cept for 8 hours
Cuz real casta-ass wizards need sleep.

And all I gotta say to you
Wannabe, gonnaba, spell-castin' crossbow-shootin' bastards
Is when you run out of spells, what the fuck you gonna do?
Damn it feels good to be a casta.

That reminds me (short 'n angst-free)

Sep. 16th, 2008 | 11:31 pm

That's what she said.

Wait, what?

Anyways, does anyone know of some good literary/thought experiment-y examples of a dude getting too much knowledge or something and being sad or whatever? You know the thing. There's the story by the philosopher (I forget who, halp!) about the rich king who had everything, but knew too much. But when someone asked him if he would rather be some random ignorant dude who was happy, he said "Nuh-uh, hell no!" because he would rather be wise and unhappy than ignorant and blissful. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Anyways, that seems like the sort of thing that would pop up fairly often, so if anyone's heard of it (or something similar; going crazy and destroying the world is acceptable, too!) or something similar, please, let me know! I want to write a paper on it for some reason. Or at least an absurdly lengthy blog.

Thanks!

Stopping the World

Sep. 4th, 2008 | 11:05 pm

Yes, I've become obsessed with Dr. Horrible as of late. As I write this, the soundtrack is playing in the background. Good stuff. But I figured it's been a long time since I analyzed something in-depth, so here goes!

To preface this, I have a quote from my poetry book;

"Asked to explain a passage in one of his poems, Robert Browning replied that when he had written the poem, only God and he knew what it meant; but 'Now, only God knows.'"

I'm analyzing things that are there. I am not saying "This is what Whedon intended." I am saying "This is something present in the show that means something." So with that in mind, let's delve into the world of humanities! *gasp*

*pauses the soundtrack*

Okay, easier to think.

CS wankery, go!

Sep. 1st, 2008 | 02:33 pm

So, my roommates and I are working on a program that will keep track of debts between room/apartment/housemates for grocery shopping. Not only will it keep track of it, but it will also keep track of the simplest way (ie, the least transactions that will need to be made) to resolve these debts.

What I am wondering is the following:

1) Has anyone done something similar to this before? I'm just curious; I want to solve it on my own. I'm doing the algorithms and whatnot; my roommate is doing the gui stuff and all the things I don't like doing >.<

2) Would anyone be interested in getting the program after we're done with it? It should be pretty damn useful. Hell, it's going to be scalable to an arbitrary number of roommates (for n >= 3), so anyone living with other people should be able to find some use in it.

Now, back to the wankery! =D This is fun.

fyi

Jun. 13th, 2008 | 10:30 pm

- I am back in Pennsylvania

- I will get back to campus next Friday!

- There was something I needed to post here for which I originally came up with the title "fyi" for this entry, but I sure as hell can't remember what it was.

Also, while watching The Soup (awesome show), they were making fun of some wrestling thing where they were calling people for some stupid thing. One of the people they called had the thing where they had a song as their ringtone, and it was Never Gonna Give You Up! Fuck yeah!

The Lazy Man's Exercise

May. 23rd, 2008 | 04:22 pm

So, I'm trying to get in shape over the summer. This is one of my major goals. However, I don't really feel like going all the way to the gym. So, does anyone know of decent things to do to get in shape that don't require equipment? There's pushups, situps, and running/jogging/walking, but I'm sure there must be more.

I have a cute girl's phone number~
We're gonna hang out next time I'm in town~

*cough*

Yeah, I'm sort of happy =D Might as well get it all out of the way now since there's no way anything good can possibly come of it, but....I have a cute girl's phone number! So for these few fleeting moments (until the cold truth confronts me), everything is right with the world ^_^

Freshman retrospective, part I

May. 18th, 2008 | 09:16 pm

So, I'm finally done with my freshman year of college. I still have a bunch of packing left to do, but it's mostly just cleaning up shit from my desk, vacuuming, and making sure everything will be able to fit in my mom's car when she picks me up tomorrow morning. Here are some of the highlights of the year, according to me:

Orientation. Oh, orientation....what a strange week that was. Met my roommate, met some people who I've hardly exchanged two words with since, and met some other people who I still regularly hang out now, nine months later. The first night here was fun; we went out onto the football field and threw a frisbee around. We tried to slide on the slick TartanTurf2 (heh), but Josh was the only one who could do it reasonably well. Then we went inside and talked about politics for a while. I wish I could remember who all was in that group...I know there was Josh and Sam and Gabe (this was the proto-Cohort), as well as some other people from Donner, some of whom I still hang out with, but some of whom I don't.

Playfair? What's playfair? It's almost like I blocked out the traumatic memories...huh. (actually, it wasn't that bad, but it was a WEIRD event)

Firefly! It sort of started the whole "cohort watches movies/TV in the TV lounge" thing, and it was a damn good way to kick off something that I hope continues in the years to come. Firefly is an excellent show, and I really need to read those comics.

And then there was D&D. Quite a fun campaign so far, and I'm guessing that it's going to continue that way for as long as we're still playing. I really like the character I have rolled up for next semester =D

The cohort! Who could forget the cohort? Coming to CMU, I was afraid I was going to live the life of a hermit with few - if any - friends; hell, I was afraid my roommate and I wouldn't even get along. Silly me - turns out, I've got the cohort now!

(to be continued...)

Carnival!

Apr. 17th, 2008 | 06:46 pm

Woo, it's carnival! Also known as "lots of time with no classes"! It's pretty cool; there's an entire week before my next....wait, shit, no, I have matrix due on Monday. Dammit.

Correction! There's an entire half week left 'til my next homework is due! It's...slightly less awesome than when I thought I had a whole week left! Oh well. Good times, more or less.

I've actually had a lot of free time lately. This has resulted in a significantly increased amount of Arcanum and Morrowind in my life. Both of these are excellent games; if you like RPGs, you should definitely check them out. Very expansive, customizable, open-ended games, so if you're into that sort of thing, they definitely exemplify the genre.

Tomorrow should be interesting. I'm going to Target with alanv (who is back, woo!) and feis and possible some others to pick up hair dye in order to (gasp) dye my hair! (shocking that we would do such a thing with hair dye, eh?) I'm also gonna try to get a new keyboard; this one I'm using now blows ass. Sorry, keyboard, but you sorta do. Stupid giant enter key and tiny backspace key and misplaced \ key....bah. Hopefully I'll get one that's easier to type on, like my laptop's keyboard...now THERE'S a keyboard.

I guess that's it for now. Whee! It's a beautiful day outside, so of course I'm going to enjoy it by...sitting inside and playing MORE VIDEO GAMES WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
